itinerary:
CasablancaThis week-long tour may be brief, but it will create lasting memories! Your adventure begins as you arrive at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca. After clearing customs, you’ll meet your professional, English-speaking driver, who will be there to take you to your hotel. He’ll soon become a friend, ensuring your trip runs smoothly and introducing you to the authentic side of Morocco that many tourists miss.
As you travel to the hotel, take in your surroundings. Do you find Casablanca to be more modern than you anticipated? Perhaps you’re noticing the beautiful djellabas worn by older Moroccan men and women…
If you arrive early enough, your driver will take you to the Hassan II Mosque, one of Casablanca’s most iconic landmarks, named after King Hassan II. The mosque overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, its turquoise and green minaret standing tall against the horizon. You might have to squint to appreciate the intricate patterns of one of the tallest minarets in the world.
Inside, you’ll be awed by the stunning artistry—the decorated archways and detailed architecture will take your breath away. Don’t forget to ask your guide about the religious symbolism woven into the mosque’s beauty.
Today, you’ll journey to Fes, a city rich in Morocco’s heritage. As you travel, enjoy the scenic landscapes along the way to Rabat, where you’ll stop for lunch. Rabat, the capital of Morocco, is a modern city situated by the beach. It offers a down-to-earth vibe, as it is not heavily frequented by tourists.
In Rabat, you’ll have the chance to visit a local restaurant to savor delicious Moroccan cuisine—it’s always more authentic when enjoyed at a local eatery rather than a tourist spot. You can also drive by the residence of Morocco’s king or stroll down a palm tree-lined boulevard.
As you approach Fes, you’ll pass through the modern New City before reaching the Medina, established in the 9th century. This medieval city is car-free, so you’ll see donkeys transporting goods through its grand ornate gates. The Medina is a labyrinth of over 9,000 narrow streets, some so tight that you’ll have to walk single file! Imagine stepping into a way of life that has been beautifully preserved for centuries…
Today is dedicated to discovering the enchanting medina of Fes! You’ll want to soak in every detail of these lively streets to share your incredible experiences with friends and family later.
Imagine seeing donkeys carrying Coca Cola into the ancient city, shops overflowing with vibrant spices, and storehouses stacked high with hand-woven carpets in every imaginable color and design. The aroma of freshly baked bread will fill the air as you wander through the bustling markets.
You’ll have the chance to touch the smooth blue and white pottery and stroll past stalls brimming with fresh fruit. The call to prayer will resonate throughout the city, reminding everyone of their spiritual duties. This is your opportunity to experience the authentic essence of Fes. Your guide will be eager to share insights and stories about the various stops along the way, satisfying your curiosity as a traveler.
While you might not feel overly hungry (because the best way to travel is by sampling every delicious roadside snack), you’ll eventually find yourself deep within the medina, ready to enjoy lunch at one of the finest local restaurants. Picture an array of salads so diverse that you can’t do them justice, all while saving room for a hearty main dish of hot tagine or fluffy couscous. You’ll devour baskets of fresh khobz because it’s simply irresistible. And just when you think you can’t handle dessert, you’ll be tempted by seasonal fresh fruit, delightful Moroccan cookies, and sweet mint tea.
Other highlights of your day will include visits to the tanneries (the scent will be unforgettable), the King’s Palace, and the potters. After a fulfilling day, you’ll return to your hotel for a relaxing evening.
Today, you’ll explore the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, which are over 2,000 years old and remarkably well-preserved. Just a little imagination will help you envision what life was like during the Roman Empire. The impressive structures and your knowledgeable guide will make this stop truly unforgettable.
Next, you’ll visit one of Morocco’s holiest cities, known for its striking white and green architecture. Here lies the tomb of Mulay Idris, the founder of Fes.
After enjoying lunch, your guide will take you on a bus tour of Meknes, an imperial city recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Finally, you’ll return to your hotel or riad for dinner and a relaxing evening.
After an early breakfast, you’ll embark on your journey across the Middle Atlas Mountains. Most of the day will be spent winding through stunning forests, jagged rock faces, and traditional Berber villages as you traverse the Atlas and begin your descent toward the Sahara Desert.
Halfway through your journey, you’ll stop for lunch in the town of Midelt, known for its fossils and geological treasures. Upon arriving at the Kasbah in Merzouga, you can enjoy a refreshing hot shower or a dip in the swimming pool, depending on the weather. Dinner will be served at the Kasbah, allowing you to relax and savor the flavors of Moroccan cuisine.
I’m sure you’ll be anticipating your four wheel drive this afternoon out across the barren land to the majestic Sahara sand dunes. You may have seen pictures of the Sahara, but its reality is overwhelming. There are dunes in every direction you look, stretching out as far as you can see with sharp shadows and soft ripples. Feel the soft sand beneath your toes in the cool morning, as you look over the sea of golden brown. As evening approaches, you’ll get to choose a camel to ride out to the Berber tents, where you have the option of staying the night.
Imagine going to sleep under more stars than you have ever seen in your life…
Start your day by climbing a tall dune to witness the sunrise in all its desert splendor. Imagine sipping fresh orange juice and enjoying Moroccan bread in the open air before mounting your camel for the return journey.
Once back, you’ll switch from the camel to a 4×4 and head back to Erfoud. From there, you’ll travel behind the High Atlas Mountains toward the stunning Todra Gorges. You’ll have the chance to take a walk through the impressive Todra Gorges, where towering walls of pink and grey rock rise 600 feet on either side of you. The picturesque river valleys offer a beautiful backdrop as you journey southeast through Morocco.
This is a perfect opportunity to experience the rural side of Morocco after exploring its vibrant cities. You’ll spend the night in the Gorges or in Ouarzazate.
After an early breakfast, you’ll depart for Marrakech, passing through Ouarzazate. Your first stop will be the stunning Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, a true gem of Morocco. This collection of buildings showcases the distinctive southern Moroccan architecture and is rich in history, all set against a beautiful backdrop. In true Moroccan fashion, the real treasures are often found off the beaten path.
After enjoying lunch, you’ll continue your journey over the mountains to Marrakech.
Upon arrival, you’ll discover a city that beautifully blends its ancient heritage with modern advancements. Marrakech is a compelling reason to visit Morocco! It has consistently ranked among TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Best Destinations, even reaching the top spot in 2015.
One must-see is the vibrant Jma El Fna, the main square of Marrakech. Your friends will be fascinated to hear about the snake charmers you encounter, the lively music that fills the square at night, and the delicious dried fruits you sample from various stalls.
Imagine the aroma of roasted peanuts wafting through the air as you feel the electric energy of the crowd participating in Marrakech’s vibrant nightlife.
As you leave your riad for a guided tour of this southern jewel of Morocco, you’ll find yourself immersed in the vibrant hustle and bustle of city life. Marrakech is filled with attractions, and you’ll have the opportunity to choose what you want to experience.
One highlight is the incredible Bahia Palace. Step into the beautifully tiled courtyard and feel transported back to the 19th century. Enjoy the tranquility of the surrounding gardens, a peaceful oasis amid the city’s activity.
Another must-visit is the Saadian Tombs, the final resting place of royalty from the Saadian dynasty. You’ll be astonished as you explore the intricately designed chambers, which have remained hidden for so long, yet are now among the most famous attractions in Marrakech.
Imagine sipping mint tea while watching the rhythms of daily life unfold in this charming city.
It’s hard to believe all that you’ve experienced in just 10 days. Today, you’ll return to Casablanca, the city where your adventure began. Take some time to stroll around and shop for souvenirs if you haven’t gathered enough yet. You might want to weigh your suitcase again, as it will likely be overflowing with charming pottery, beautiful Moroccan scarves, and flavorful spices to help you recreate the delicious dishes you’ll soon be missing.
Make sure to savor every moment of your last day!
You will be transferred to the airport for departure. Say goodbye to your driver and the country that has certainly left an imprint on you.
